PNG to JPEG Transformation FAQ
How do I convert PNG to JPEG without losing image quality?
+
Upload your PNG file and the converter applies format-aware quality optimization for JPEG. For lossless JPEG (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved; for lossy JPEG (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download. PNG uses DEFLATE compression over filtered scanlines, so every pixel survives exactly, plus a full 8-bit alpha channel. The bitstream is identical to a .jpg: DCT-based lossy compression, usually with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, wrapped in a JFIF or Exif header.
How much quality will I lose going from PNG to JPEG?
+
At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the JPEG repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the PNG as the master and regenerate the JPEG from it whenever you need a new size. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding.
Does PNG to JPEG conversion preserve transparency?
+
Transparency survives when JPEG is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware JPEG instead of JPEG=JPG. JPEG is the same standard as JPG and JFIF — the four-letter extension is the original, and the three-letter one exists only because of the DOS 8.3 filename limit.
What about EXIF metadata when converting PNG to JPEG?
+
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the JPEG. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert many PNG files to JPEG at once?
+
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
What resolution will my JPEG file have?
+
Default is 1:1 — your JPEG keeps the pixel dimensions of the source PNG. If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize-image/ after conversion, or chain it with the /image-resize/ utility.
Are my PNG files private during conversion?
+
Yes. Uploaded PNG files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted JPEG are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why is my converted JPEG bigger or smaller than I expected?
+
A PNG with strong existing compression (lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded to lossless JPEG (PNG, TIFF). A lossless PNG often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG / WebP. The ratio depends on image content — photos compress differently from line art. PNG is a poor photograph format: a photo saved as PNG is routinely five to ten times larger than the same image as JPG or WebP. JPEG shares every JPG limitation — no alpha, generational loss on re-save — with the added nuisance of software that treats the two extensions differently.
