PNG to GIF Transformation FAQ
How do I convert PNG to GIF without losing image quality?
+
Upload your PNG file and the converter applies format-aware quality optimization for GIF. For lossless GIF (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved; for lossy GIF (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download. PNG uses DEFLATE compression over filtered scanlines, so every pixel survives exactly, plus a full 8-bit alpha channel. GIF is lossless but capped at a 256-colour palette per frame, using LZW compression and single-colour binary transparency.
Does PNG to GIF conversion preserve transparency?
+
Transparency survives when GIF is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware GIF instead of GIF=JPG. GIF is CompuServe’s 1987 format, and the only reason it survived is that it animates.
What about EXIF metadata when converting PNG to GIF?
+
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the GIF. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert many PNG files to GIF at once?
+
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
What resolution will my GIF file have?
+
Default is 1:1 — your GIF keeps the pixel dimensions of the source PNG. If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize-image/ after conversion, or chain it with the /image-resize/ utility.
Are my PNG files private during conversion?
+
Yes. Uploaded PNG files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted GIF are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why is my converted GIF bigger or smaller than I expected?
+
A PNG with strong existing compression (lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded to lossless GIF (PNG, TIFF). A lossless PNG often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG / WebP. The ratio depends on image content — photos compress differently from line art. PNG is a poor photograph format: a photo saved as PNG is routinely five to ten times larger than the same image as JPG or WebP. GIF’s 256-colour ceiling wrecks gradients and video stills, and its file sizes for animation are an order of magnitude worse than WebP or MP4.
Can I use the converted GIF commercially?
+
Yes. The conversion is a format change — copyright on the image content stays with you (or whoever held it on the source PNG). We add no watermark, no metadata stamp, and claim no licence over the GIF output.
