What is an MP4 video file?

MP4 is a video container that holds one or more video streams, audio tracks, and optional subtitles. Different containers support different codecs, so compatibility depends on both the wrapper AND what is inside it. Almost every MP4 in the wild is H.264 video with AAC audio; the container also legally holds HEVC, AV1 and VP9.
Why does every site and device ask for MP4 specifically?

Because it is the one format the entire industry agreed on. MP4 is an ISO standard rather than a vendor format, hardware decoders for its usual payload ship in every phone, console, browser and television sold in the last decade, and every editor and upload form accepts it. Nothing else has that reach, which is why MP4 is the sensible default output for anything that has to simply work. MP4 is the safest possible delivery target — every phone, browser, console, editor and Smart TV built in the last decade plays it without extra software.
Why does my phone save everything as MP4?

Because the handset encodes to whatever its chip does in hardware, and MP4 is what that silicon was built around. The camera app never asks — it writes the format the device can produce at full frame rate without heating up. Converting afterwards is normal and costs nothing in quality if you pick a target that keeps the same payload. MP4 is ISO/IEC 14496-14, standardised in 2001 and derived from the same QuickTime box layout MOV uses.
Can I play MP4 in a browser tab without installing anything?

Yes — MP4 is one of the handful of video formats browsers decode natively, so dropping the file into a tab or embedding it in a page just works on desktop and mobile alike. That makes it the right choice for anything that has to play inline on a web page, and it is the reason a conversion into this format is often the fastest fix for "the video will not play on my site".
Are subtitles inside an MP4 selectable, or burned into the picture?

Selectable, if they were added properly. MP4 carries subtitles as their own stream alongside the video, so the viewer can switch languages, turn them off, or restyle them in a player that supports it. Burned-in subtitles are also possible — they are just pixels in the frame — but they are permanent, and there is rarely a reason to choose them when the container supports the real thing.
Why does only one audio track survive in my MP4?

Because that is all the format dependably carries. Extra audio streams can be written into an MP4, but playback support past the first one is inconsistent enough that most tools simply keep one and discard the others. If the source had a commentary or a second language, extract those to separate audio files rather than trusting them to a container that hides them. MP4 only supports one widely-honoured subtitle format (mov_text), and multi-track audio is unreliable outside desktop players.
Does using MP4 require a patent licence?

Not for you. The codecs involved are covered by patent pools, and the licensing is settled by the people who ship decoders — the phone, the browser, the operating system — long before a file reaches you. It is why the format is everywhere in hardware and why royalty-free alternatives exist at all, and it changes nothing about converting a file you already have.
Can I just rename the extension instead of converting MP4?

Almost never, and it is worth understanding why: the extension is a label, while the bytes inside are structured for one specific format. Renaming produces a file whose name promises something its contents do not deliver, and whatever opens it either refuses the file or misreads it. The one narrow exception is two formats that are genuinely the same container under different names — and even then a proper rewrap is safer than a rename.
Why convert MP4 to another video format?

MP4 is already the universal target, so the reasons to leave it are specific ones. Convert MP4 to WebM for web embedding where a smaller file matters, to MOV when working in Final Cut or another Apple-native pipeline, and to MKV when you need several audio tracks or soft subtitles carried in one file.
Does MP4 conversion re-encode the video?
