GIF to TIFF Transformation FAQ
How do I convert GIF to TIFF without losing image quality?
+
Upload your GIF file and the converter applies format-aware quality optimization for TIFF. For lossless TIFF (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved; for lossy TIFF (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download. GIF is lossless but capped at a 256-colour palette per frame, using LZW compression and single-colour binary transparency. TIFF is a container more than a codec: it can hold uncompressed, LZW, ZIP or even JPEG data, at up to 32 bits per channel, with multiple pages in one file.
My GIF is animated — what happens to the other frames?
+
Only the first frame survives, because TIFF is a still format with nowhere to store the rest. If the animation matters, target a format that animates, or convert to a video container instead and keep the motion. TIFF’s flexibility is its weakness — two TIFFs can be structured so differently that software reading one fails on the other — and files are large.
Does GIF to TIFF conversion preserve transparency?
+
Transparency survives when TIFF is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware TIFF instead of TIFF=JPG. TIFF is the Tagged Image File Format from 1986, and it is the format scanning, publishing and archiving industries standardised on.
What about EXIF metadata when converting GIF to TIFF?
+
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the TIFF. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert many GIF files to TIFF at once?
+
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
What resolution will my TIFF file have?
+
Default is 1:1 — your TIFF keeps the pixel dimensions of the source GIF. If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize-image/ after conversion, or chain it with the /image-resize/ utility.
Are my GIF files private during conversion?
+
Yes. Uploaded GIF files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted TIFF are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why is my converted TIFF bigger or smaller than I expected?
+
A GIF with strong existing compression (lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded to lossless TIFF (PNG, TIFF). A lossless GIF often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG / WebP. The ratio depends on image content — photos compress differently from line art. GIF’s 256-colour ceiling wrecks gradients and video stills, and its file sizes for animation are an order of magnitude worse than WebP or MP4.
