GIF to WebP Transformation FAQ
How do I convert GIF to WebP without losing image quality?
+
Upload your GIF file and the converter applies format-aware quality optimization for WebP. For lossless WebP (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved; for lossy WebP (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download. GIF is lossless but capped at a 256-colour palette per frame, using LZW compression and single-colour binary transparency. WebP offers both lossy and lossless modes, with alpha transparency and animation available in either.
How much quality will I lose going from GIF to WebP?
+
At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the WebP repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the GIF as the master and regenerate the WebP from it whenever you need a new size. GIF animation plays absolutely everywhere — email clients, forums, chat apps and browsers all render it with no codec negotiation.
Does GIF to WebP conversion preserve transparency?
+
Transparency survives when WebP is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware WebP instead of WebP=JPG. WebP is Google’s 2010 image format, built from the VP8 keyframe encoder and intended to replace JPG, PNG and GIF at once.
What about EXIF metadata when converting GIF to WebP?
+
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the WebP. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert many GIF files to WebP at once?
+
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
What resolution will my WebP file have?
+
Default is 1:1 — your WebP keeps the pixel dimensions of the source GIF. If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize-image/ after conversion, or chain it with the /image-resize/ utility.
Are my GIF files private during conversion?
+
Yes. Uploaded GIF files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted WebP are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why is my converted WebP bigger or smaller than I expected?
+
A GIF with strong existing compression (lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded to lossless WebP (PNG, TIFF). A lossless GIF often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG / WebP. The ratio depends on image content — photos compress differently from line art. GIF’s 256-colour ceiling wrecks gradients and video stills, and its file sizes for animation are an order of magnitude worse than WebP or MP4. WebP is still second-class outside the browser — print workflows, older Office builds and some phone galleries do not accept it.
