MOV to PNG Transformation FAQ
How do I extract frames from an MOV video as PNG images?
+
Upload the MOV and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one PNG from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a PNG image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode. MOV is Apple’s QuickTime container, shipped in 1991 and still the format an iPhone, iPad or Final Cut Pro timeline writes by default. PNG was designed in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF, and became the web’s default lossless image format.
Will subtitles show up in the PNG frames I extract?
+
Not if they are a real subtitle track. An MOV keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as a PNG has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became an MOV are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.
Does the PNG output support transparency?
+
The format does, but the source has no alpha to give it — video frames and rendered pages are fully opaque by nature, so every pixel arrives solid. The alpha channel is still useful afterwards: it means you can cut a subject out of the PNG later without changing format again. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding.
How big will the PNG files be?
+
Larger than you might expect, because PNG keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. PNG uses DEFLATE compression over filtered scanlines, so every pixel survives exactly, plus a full 8-bit alpha channel.
At what resolution does each extracted PNG frame come out?
+
The same resolution as the MOV video — a 1080p MOV produces 1920×1080 PNG frames; a 4K MOV produces 3840×2160 PNG frames. Use the resize utility after extraction if you want smaller thumbnails or social-media-sized crops.
Can I extract every single frame from MOV as PNG?
+
Yes, with All Frames in the Frame Extraction option, but watch the count: one minute of 30 fps video gives 1,800 PNG images. For a single still, choose Single Frame and enter the second you want instead.
Will the extracted PNG images preserve the MOV color grading?
+
HDR footage is not tone-mapped: each frame is converted from the MOV as it is decoded, so a frame from an HDR MOV can look flat or washed out as a PNG. Standard (SDR) video keeps its colours.
What is the file size of one extracted PNG frame?
+
Depends on resolution and PNG codec. A 1080p PNG frame is typically 2 to 5 MB; a 1080p JPG at quality-85 is 200 to 500 KB; a 4K PNG is 6 to 15 MB. At the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p MOV produces ~50 GB total.
How long does frame extraction from MOV to PNG take?
+
It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
Can I extract frames at specific timestamps in the MOV?
+
One at a time. Single Frame takes one time in seconds (for example 83 for 1:23) and saves that frame as a PNG. There is no field for a list of times, so run the conversion again for each extra timestamp.
Is my MOV video private during frame extraction?
+
Yes. Uploaded MOV files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted PNG are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
