BMP to PNG Transformation FAQ
How do I convert BMP to PNG without losing image quality?
+
Upload your BMP file and the converter applies format-aware quality optimization for PNG. For lossless PNG (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved; for lossy PNG (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse. PNG uses DEFLATE compression over filtered scanlines, so every pixel survives exactly, plus a full 8-bit alpha channel.
Can I get transparency once the image is PNG?
+
The PNG format supports it, but the conversion cannot invent it. A BMP has no alpha channel, so every pixel including the background arrives fully opaque. Run /image-removebackground/ afterwards to cut the subject out — then the alpha channel PNG provides has something to store. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding.
Does BMP to PNG conversion preserve transparency?
+
Transparency survives when PNG is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware PNG instead of PNG=JPG. PNG was designed in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF, and became the web’s default lossless image format.
What about EXIF metadata when converting BMP to PNG?
+
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the PNG. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert many BMP files to PNG at once?
+
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
What resolution will my PNG file have?
+
Default is 1:1 — your PNG keeps the pixel dimensions of the source BMP. If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize-image/ after conversion, or chain it with the /image-resize/ utility.
Are my BMP files private during conversion?
+
Yes. Uploaded BMP files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted PNG are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why is my converted PNG bigger or smaller than I expected?
+
A BMP with strong existing compression (lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded to lossless PNG (PNG, TIFF). A lossless BMP often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG / WebP. The ratio depends on image content — photos compress differently from line art. BMP is gigantic — a 12-megapixel photo is around 36 MB — and no browser treats it as a sane web format. PNG is a poor photograph format: a photo saved as PNG is routinely five to ten times larger than the same image as JPG or WebP.
