How do I convert BMP to JPEG without losing image quality?

For lossless JPEG (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved; for lossy JPEG (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse. The bitstream is identical to a .jpg: DCT-based lossy compression, usually with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, wrapped in a JFIF or Exif header.
How much quality will I lose going from BMP to JPEG?

At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the JPEG repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the BMP as the master and regenerate the JPEG from it whenever you need a new size. BMP needs no decoder library at all, so it remains the safe interchange format for embedded systems and legacy Windows tooling.
Does BMP to JPEG conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when JPEG is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware JPEG instead of JPEG=JPG. JPEG is the same standard as JPG and JFIF — the four-letter extension is the original, and the three-letter one exists only because of the DOS 8.3 filename limit.
What about EXIF metadata when converting BMP to JPEG?

In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the JPEG. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.

Why is my converted JPEG bigger or smaller than I expected?

A BMP with strong existing compression (lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded to lossless JPEG (PNG, TIFF). A lossless BMP often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG / WebP. The ratio depends on image content — photos compress differently from line art. BMP is gigantic — a 12-megapixel photo is around 36 MB — and no browser treats it as a sane web format. JPEG shares every JPG limitation — no alpha, generational loss on re-save — with the added nuisance of software that treats the two extensions differently.
