How do I convert BMP to TIFF without losing image quality?

For lossless TIFF (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved; for lossy TIFF (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse. TIFF is a container more than a codec: it can hold uncompressed, LZW, ZIP or even JPEG data, at up to 32 bits per channel, with multiple pages in one file.
Can I get transparency once the image is TIFF?

The TIFF format supports it, but the conversion cannot invent it. A BMP has no alpha channel, so every pixel including the background arrives fully opaque. Run /image-removebackground/ afterwards to cut the subject out — then the alpha channel TIFF provides has something to store. TIFF handles CMYK, 16-bit depth, embedded ICC profiles and multi-page documents, which is exactly what print and archival workflows require.
Does BMP to TIFF conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when TIFF is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware TIFF instead of TIFF=JPG. TIFF is the Tagged Image File Format from 1986, and it is the format scanning, publishing and archiving industries standardised on.
What about EXIF metadata when converting BMP to TIFF?

In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the TIFF. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.

What resolution will my TIFF file have?

Default is 1:1 — your TIFF keeps the pixel dimensions of the source BMP. If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize-image/ after conversion, or chain it with the /image-resize/ utility.
Are my BMP files private during conversion?

Why is my converted TIFF bigger or smaller than I expected?

A BMP with strong existing compression (lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded to lossless TIFF (PNG, TIFF). A lossless BMP often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG / WebP. The ratio depends on image content — photos compress differently from line art. BMP is gigantic — a 12-megapixel photo is around 36 MB — and no browser treats it as a sane web format. TIFF’s flexibility is its weakness — two TIFFs can be structured so differently that software reading one fails on the other — and files are large.
