BMP to GIF Transformation FAQ
How do I convert BMP to GIF without losing image quality?
+
Upload your BMP file and the converter applies format-aware quality optimization for GIF. For lossless GIF (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved; for lossy GIF (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse. GIF is lossless but capped at a 256-colour palette per frame, using LZW compression and single-colour binary transparency.
Can I get transparency once the image is GIF?
+
The GIF format supports it, but the conversion cannot invent it. A BMP has no alpha channel, so every pixel including the background arrives fully opaque. Run /image-removebackground/ afterwards to cut the subject out — then the alpha channel GIF provides has something to store. GIF animation plays absolutely everywhere — email clients, forums, chat apps and browsers all render it with no codec negotiation.
Does BMP to GIF conversion preserve transparency?
+
Transparency survives when GIF is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware GIF instead of GIF=JPG. GIF is CompuServe’s 1987 format, and the only reason it survived is that it animates.
What about EXIF metadata when converting BMP to GIF?
+
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the GIF. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert many BMP files to GIF at once?
+
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
What resolution will my GIF file have?
+
Default is 1:1 — your GIF keeps the pixel dimensions of the source BMP. If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize-image/ after conversion, or chain it with the /image-resize/ utility.
Are my BMP files private during conversion?
+
Yes. Uploaded BMP files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted GIF are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why is my converted GIF bigger or smaller than I expected?
+
A BMP with strong existing compression (lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded to lossless GIF (PNG, TIFF). A lossless BMP often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG / WebP. The ratio depends on image content — photos compress differently from line art. BMP is gigantic — a 12-megapixel photo is around 36 MB — and no browser treats it as a sane web format. GIF’s 256-colour ceiling wrecks gradients and video stills, and its file sizes for animation are an order of magnitude worse than WebP or MP4.
