How do I convert PSD to JPEG without losing image quality?

What happens to the layers in my PSD file?

They are flattened, permanently, into one composited image. Blend modes, masks, adjustment layers and editable text are all resolved into final pixels because JPEG has no structure to hold them. Keep the PSD as the working master and treat the JPEG strictly as an export. PSD keeps every editing decision reversible, which is why it is the master format for design work that will be revised. JPEG shares every JPG limitation — no alpha, generational loss on re-save — with the added nuisance of software that treats the two extensions differently.

Will transparency survive converting PSD to JPEG?

No — JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent regions are composited against a background colour, white unless you change it. That is the single most common surprise in this conversion: a logo that looked clean on a dark page arrives with a white box around it. Set the matte colour to match wherever the image will sit, or choose a target that keeps alpha.

How much quality will I lose going from PSD to JPEG?

At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the JPEG repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the PSD as the master and regenerate the JPEG from it whenever you need a new size.

Does PSD to JPEG conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when JPEG is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware JPEG instead of JPEG=JPG. JPEG is the same standard as JPG and JFIF — the four-letter extension is the original, and the three-letter one exists only because of the DOS 8.3 filename limit.

Will my color profile (sRGB / Adobe RGB / CMYK) survive PSD to JPEG?

Embedded ICC color profiles are read from PSD and re-attached to the JPEG output where the format supports it (JPG, PNG, TIFF, WebP). Formats without profile support fall back to sRGB, which keeps colors consistent across most modern displays.

What about EXIF metadata when converting PSD to JPEG?
