How do I extract the audio from my MKV file as Opus?

There is no second video pass — the visual track is discarded immediately so extraction is much faster than a full re-encode. MKV is Matroska, an open container designed in 2002 with no licensing restrictions and no ceiling on what it can hold. Opus is an IETF standard from 2012 that merged Skype’s SILK speech codec with Xiph’s CELT music codec into one design.
Is converting MKV to Opus a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the Opus encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the Opus from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. MKV is codec-agnostic: H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video sit happily beside AAC, FLAC, Opus, DTS or Dolby audio in the same file. Opus scales from 6 kbps mono speech to 510 kbps stereo music in the same bitstream and switches modes automatically.
Can I tag the Opus with artist and album information?

Default bitrate for lossy Opus is 192 kbps, which is transparent for music. You can override to 320 kbps (audiophile) or 96-128 kbps (voice / podcast / smaller file). The bitrate dropdown is exposed in the advanced options before you click convert.
Will I lose audio quality going from MKV to Opus?

If Opus is lossless (WAV, FLAC), every sample is preserved exactly. If Opus is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the Opus codec recompresses the source audio — at 192 kbps the result is transparent for almost all content. Going lossy → lossless never recovers detail already discarded.
Does the Opus audio keep the original sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz audio in your MKV stays 48 kHz in the Opus output. For CD-burning or legacy player compatibility you can downsample to 44.1 kHz via the sample-rate dropdown; the resampler is high-quality SoX-grade.
