How do I extract the audio from my MKV file as WMA?

Is converting MKV to WMA a second round of lossy compression?

Both formats are lossy, so the WMA encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the WMA from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. MKV is codec-agnostic: H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video sit happily beside AAC, FLAC, Opus, DTS or Dolby audio in the same file. Can I tag the WMA with artist and album information?

Will I lose audio quality going from MKV to WMA?

If WMA is lossless (WAV, FLAC), every sample is preserved exactly. If WMA is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the WMA codec recompresses the source audio — at 192 kbps the result is transparent for almost all content. Going lossy → lossless never recovers detail already discarded.
Does the WMA audio keep the original sample rate?

Why does the WMA file have silent gaps where the MKV had sound?

Almost always a wrong-stream selection: MKV had multiple audio tracks and the demuxer picked an empty or auxiliary stream. Use the advanced "audio stream" picker to select stream 0, 1, 2 explicitly, or target a WMA container that supports multi-track output (FLAC, OGG).
