How do I extract frames from an MKV video as TIFF images?

Upload the MKV and the converter exposes a frame-extraction picker: every Nth frame, frames at specific timestamps, or one frame per second. Each chosen frame is encoded as an individual TIFF file and the full set is bundled into a ZIP archive for download. MKV is Matroska, an open container designed in 2002 with no licensing restrictions and no ceiling on what it can hold. TIFF is the Tagged Image File Format from 1986, and it is the format scanning, publishing and archiving industries standardised on.
Not if they are a real subtitle track. An MKV keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as a TIFF has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became an MKV are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.
Not as a single button, but the MKV makes it straightforward: chapter marks are stored in the container as named timestamps, so read the chapter list off the file and paste those times into the timestamp field. You get one TIFF per chapter, in order, which is the usual way of building thumbnails for a long recording. Sources with no chapter marks leave you picking scenes by eye instead. MKV is the archival container of choice because it stores unlimited audio tracks, soft subtitles, chapter markers and cover art in one file.
The format does, but the source has no alpha to give it — video frames and rendered pages are fully opaque by nature, so every pixel arrives solid. The alpha channel is still useful afterwards: it means you can cut a subject out of the TIFF later without changing format again. TIFF handles CMYK, 16-bit depth, embedded ICC profiles and multi-page documents, which is exactly what print and archival workflows require.
Larger than you might expect, because TIFF keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. TIFF is a container more than a codec: it can hold uncompressed, LZW, ZIP or even JPEG data, at up to 32 bits per channel, with multiple pages in one file.
The same resolution as the MKV video — a 1080p MKV produces 1920×1080 TIFF frames; a 4K MKV produces 3840×2160 TIFF frames. Use the resize utility after extraction if you want smaller thumbnails or social-media-sized crops.

Yes — colour is decoded with the matrix the source MKV uses (BT.709 for HD, BT.2020 for 4K HDR). HDR sources are tone-mapped to SDR on extraction to TIFF because most TIFF formats (PNG, JPG) cannot store HDR pixel ranges natively.
Depends on resolution and TIFF codec. A 1080p PNG frame is typically 2 to 5 MB; a 1080p JPG at quality-85 is 200 to 500 KB; a 4K PNG is 6 to 15 MB. At the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p MKV produces ~50 GB total.
The MKV container does not store per-frame EXIF the way a still camera does, so the TIFF files come out with empty EXIF. We embed a `creation_time` field pointing at the source frame timestamp so you can re-sort the bundle by capture order.
Frame extraction is fast — typically 20 to 30% of source duration on the standard pipeline. A 5-minute MKV → TIFF bundle finishes in about a minute regardless of frame count, because the bottleneck is the TIFF encoder, not the MKV demuxer.
