TIFF to PDF Transformation FAQ

Is the resulting PDF searchable with real selectable text?
+
Yes when the TIFF contains real text (DOCX, ODT, HTML, TXT, EPUB). Image-based TIFF produces an image-only PDF; run /pdf-ocr/ afterward to make it text-searchable via optical character recognition. TIFF is a container more than a codec: it can hold uncompressed, LZW, ZIP or even JPEG data, at up to 32 bits per channel, with multiple pages in one file.
Then the conversion produces a picture of the text rather than the text itself, and searching it finds nothing. Run /pdf-ocr/ to add a recognised text layer first; optical character recognition turns the scanned pixels into selectable, searchable characters that the conversion can then carry through properly.
Yes, and the TIFF would not have. Browsers ship a decoder for PDF and none for TIFF, so a TIFF link forces a download while a PDF renders inline. That is usually the deciding factor when the file is going onto a web page rather than into an application. A PDF looks byte-for-byte identical on every machine and every printer, which is why contracts, invoices and academic papers all live in it.
It depends entirely on whether real text is present. A PDF generated from a document carries an actual text layer and is searchable; a PDF built from scans or images is a picture of text and is not, until OCR adds a layer. /pdf-ocr/ does that, and it is worth running before any conversion that expects to read the words.
Not in this tool directly — convert TIFF to PDF first, then use the /pdf-* tools to add a password, watermark, or restrict editing / printing permissions on the output.
Yes. Uploaded TIFF files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted PDF are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.

TIFF

TIFF files accommodate high bit depths and lossless compression, ideal for cinema-grade photography and printing.

PDF

PDF files preserve formatting across all devices and operating systems, making them ideal for sharing files that need to look the same everywhere.
