How do I convert M4A audio to Opus without losing quality?

Upload the M4A file and the converter chooses the Opus codec and bitrate to match the source. Lossless Opus (WAV / FLAC / ALAC) preserves every sample bit-identically; lossy Opus (MP3 / AAC / OGG / Opus) defaults to 192 kbps which is transparent for most ears. An M4A holds AAC in most cases, or Apple Lossless (ALAC) when it came from a lossless rip. Opus scales from 6 kbps mono speech to 510 kbps stereo music in the same bitstream and switches modes automatically.
Is converting M4A to Opus a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the Opus encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the Opus from that instead avoids the double pass entirely.
Why will some of my M4A files not convert?

DRM. A subset of M4A files are encrypted by the store or the software that issued them, and encrypted audio cannot be decoded by any converter. Anything you ripped yourself, recorded, or bought without protection converts normally; a licensed purchase will not. M4A hides two very different things behind one extension — lossy AAC and lossless ALAC — and non-Apple hardware support is inconsistent.
Will the Opus play in my car or on older hardware?

Often not. M4A is decoded by essentially everything, including car head units and elderly players; Opus needs software that knows the codec, which standalone hardware frequently does not have. If the destination is a car stereo or a portable player, that is a strong argument for staying on M4A. Opus is almost never supported by standalone hardware — assume software playback only, and expect car stereos to ignore it.
What bitrate will the resulting Opus file use?

Default is 192 kbps for lossy Opus; pass-through for lossless Opus. Override to 320 kbps for audiophile or 96 kbps for voice / podcast. The choice trades file size against audible fidelity; below 96 kbps lossy artifacts become noticeable on music.
Will going from M4A to Opus reduce my audio quality?

If M4A is lossy and Opus is lossless (e.g. MP3 → WAV), the Opus is no better than the M4A — you cannot recover information already discarded. If M4A is lossless and Opus is lossy, the Opus codec recompresses; at 192 kbps the result is transparent for most content.
Does the M4A to Opus converter keep ID3 / metadata tags?

Yes — title, artist, album, year, track number, and album art are read from the M4A container and written into the Opus container where the format supports tags.
