How do I convert M4A audio to WMA without losing quality?

Upload the M4A file and the converter chooses the WMA codec and bitrate to match the source. Lossless WMA (WAV / FLAC / ALAC) preserves every sample bit-identically; lossy WMA (MP3 / AAC / OGG / Opus) defaults to 192 kbps which is transparent for most ears. An M4A holds AAC in most cases, or Apple Lossless (ALAC) when it came from a lossless rip. WMA is lossy by default, in an ASF container, with lossless and voice-optimised variants that are rarely encountered.
Is converting M4A to WMA a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the WMA encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the WMA from that instead avoids the double pass entirely.
Why will some of my M4A files not convert?

DRM. A subset of M4A files are encrypted by the store or the software that issued them, and encrypted audio cannot be decoded by any converter. Anything you ripped yourself, recorded, or bought without protection converts normally; a licensed purchase will not. M4A hides two very different things behind one extension — lossy AAC and lossless ALAC — and non-Apple hardware support is inconsistent.
Will the WMA play in my car or on older hardware?

Often not. M4A is decoded by essentially everything, including car head units and elderly players; WMA needs software that knows the codec, which standalone hardware frequently does not have. If the destination is a car stereo or a portable player, that is a strong argument for staying on M4A. WMA is unsupported almost everywhere outside Windows, and older WMA files may carry DRM that blocks conversion entirely.
What bitrate will the resulting WMA file use?

Default is 192 kbps for lossy WMA; pass-through for lossless WMA. Override to 320 kbps for audiophile or 96 kbps for voice / podcast. The choice trades file size against audible fidelity; below 96 kbps lossy artifacts become noticeable on music.
Will going from M4A to WMA reduce my audio quality?

If M4A is lossy and WMA is lossless (e.g. MP3 → WAV), the WMA is no better than the M4A — you cannot recover information already discarded. If M4A is lossless and WMA is lossy, the WMA codec recompresses; at 192 kbps the result is transparent for most content.
