Nothing is decoded and nothing is re-compressed, so a feature-length file finishes in under a minute instead of half an hour, with output quality identical to the source. VOB is the Video Object container found in the VIDEO_TS folder of every DVD — an MPEG-2 program stream with DVD-specific navigation data added. MPEG here means an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 program stream, the format standardised for Video CD and then for DVD and broadcast television.
My VOB recordings are split into numbered parts — does MPEG have the same limit?

No, and that is one of the better reasons to move. The VOB container has a practical single-file ceiling that long or high-bitrate recordings run straight into, which is exactly why old captures arrive as part1, part2, part3. MPEG has no equivalent limit, so the pieces can be rejoined into one continuous file. VOB is split across files, may be CSS-encrypted, and carries navigation packets that confuse general-purpose players.
What happens to the subtitle tracks in my VOB file?

They cannot stay selectable, because MPEG has no soft-subtitle stream to hold them. There are two ways out: burn them into the video during conversion, which makes them permanent and unstyleable, or export them as a separate .srt alongside the MPEG for the player to load. The converter tells you which it did rather than dropping them silently. MPEG-2 needs roughly four to six times the bitrate of H.264 for the same picture, and its content is frequently interlaced, which looks combed on modern displays.
Why does my VOB file fail to convert to MPEG?

Almost always DRM. Some VOB files are encrypted at the bitstream level by the store or software that issued them, and an encrypted stream cannot be decoded by us or by anything else without the licence key.
