What do I get back when I convert PDF to Excel?

You get Excel output holding the tables that were in your PDF, and nothing else. The tool extracts tabular data; it does not reproduce the document. Paragraphs, headings and pictures are not part of the output by design.
What if my PDF has no tables in it?

Then it cannot be converted, and the converter says so instead of pretending otherwise. Where there is no table there is nothing to put into Excel, so you get a clear error asking for a file that contains at least one table - not a valid-but-empty spreadsheet.
Can I get the whole PDF, text included, into the Excel?

Not through this tool, and not through any tool honestly: a spreadsheet is a grid of cells, so continuous prose has nowhere to go. Use a document target (DOCX, ODT, TXT) when you want the whole PDF; use Excel when you want its tables.
How does the converter find the tables in my PDF?

It depends on the source. A DOCX or DOC stores its tables as real table objects, so they are read directly and exactly. A PDF stores no such structure, so the tables are detected from ruled lines and column-aligned text on every page.
What happens if my PDF contains several tables?

All of them are extracted. The converter walks the whole PDF rather than stopping at the first table, so a report with a dozen tables produces Excel output carrying all twelve.
My PDF is a scan - why does it produce nothing?

Because a scanned page is an image. The extractor works from actual text and its coordinates, and an image contains neither. OCR the PDF into a searchable file first; that version converts to Excel normally.
Do merged cells and formatting survive PDF to Excel?

Cell values and the row-and-column grid are what carry across. Visual styling - fonts, fills, borders - is not reproduced, and a merged cell is flattened into the grid, because the output is data rather than a picture of the original table.
Why was I told to use .xlsx instead of .xls?

Because the legacy .xls format physically cannot hold the table: it is capped at 256 columns and 65,536 rows. Rather than truncate your data silently, the converter names the limit you hit and points you at .xlsx, which has room for about a million rows.
Is Excel the right target for my PDF?

It is if the PDF is mostly tables and you intend to work with the values. It is not if you want to read or edit the document, in which case DOCX, ODT, RTF or TXT is the conversion you are looking for.
Do I need an account to convert PDF to Excel?

No. The conversion runs without registration and the Excel downloads as soon as it is ready. Upgrading raises the file-size ceiling and the number of files you can push through at once.
Does batch conversion work for PDF to Excel?

It does. Multiple PDF files are queued together and each yields a separate Excel. Any file that turns out to contain no tables is flagged on its own rather than quietly returning an empty sheet.
Is the data in my tables kept anywhere?

No. The PDF is processed in an isolated worker and erased within minutes of the Excel being delivered, and the spreadsheet goes the same way. We do not read, store or share what is in your tables - see /privacy/.
