How do I extract frames from an MKV video as JPG images?

Upload the MKV and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one JPG from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a JPG image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode. The same resolution as the MKV video — a 1080p MKV produces 1920×1080 JPG frames; a 4K MKV produces 3840×2160 JPG frames. Use the resize utility after extraction if you want smaller thumbnails or social-media-sized crops.

What is the file size of one extracted JPG frame?

Depends on resolution and JPG codec. A 1080p PNG frame is typically 2 to 5 MB; a 1080p JPG at quality-85 is 200 to 500 KB; a 4K PNG is 6 to 15 MB. At the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p MKV produces ~50 GB total.

One at a time. Single Frame takes one time in seconds (for example 83 for 1:23) and saves that frame as a JPG. There is no field for a list of times, so run the conversion again for each extra timestamp.
Is my MKV video private during frame extraction?

Yes. Uploaded MKV files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted JPG are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Almost always motion blur baked into the MKV source — the camera or subject was moving when the frame was captured. Pick timestamps from static scenes, or extract adjacent frames and choose the sharpest. The pipeline does not synthesize detail that was not there.
