Markdown to ODT Transformation FAQ

Is the Markdown to ODT converter free?
+
Yes. One conversion an hour is free, with no account needed, for a file within the free size limit. A paid plan removes the hourly limit and the size limit, and lets you add several files to one job.
It will look plain, because there is nothing to recover. A Markdown carries no styling information, so the converter applies a clean default — a readable body font, sensible margins, paragraphs separated where blank lines were. Headings are inferred where the source used a recognisable convention, and everything else arrives as body text. Markdown is the same syntax as .md, spelled out in full — some editors and static site generators expect the long extension.
Body text, headings, lists and simple tables move across cleanly in both directions. The known casualties are the same ones LibreOffice has always had: tracked changes, comments anchored to ranges, footnote numbering schemes and nested table borders. Check those specifically rather than assuming the whole document made it.
Free conversions have a size limit per file, set by the type of file, and the page tells you when a file is over it. A paid plan removes that limit, so much larger files can be converted.
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
Yes — the UI is responsive and the conversion pipeline runs server-side, so mobile devices upload-then-download just like desktops. iOS and Android browser file pickers (camera roll, Files app) work end-to-end.
Chrome, Firefox, Safari (15+), Edge, and Opera. The converter uses standard `<input type="file">` upload — no WebAssembly or PWA dependency — so even older browsers work to upload a Markdown and download the ODT.
Yes. Uploaded Markdown files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted ODT are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy. The long form is what Jekyll, Hugo and several documentation pipelines look for by default, so it fits straight into those builds.
Disable any pop-up blocker, then click the download button manually. The result link stays active for 24 hours, so if your network drops mid-download you can retry from the result page without re-uploading the Markdown.
It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame. ODT is the mandated format in several national and EU public administrations and carries no vendor lock-in. ODT round-trips imperfectly through Microsoft Word — complex tables, footnote numbering and change tracking are the usual casualties.

Markdown

Markdown is plain text with lightweight punctuation for headings, links, and lists, readable before it is ever rendered.

ODT

ODT (Open Document Text) is a file format used for word processing files in open-source office suites like LibreOffice and OpenOffice. ODT files contain text, images, and formatting, supplying a standardized format for file interchange.
