How do I extract frames from an M4V video as JPG images?

Upload the M4V and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one JPG from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a JPG image. The same resolution as the M4V video — a 1080p M4V produces 1920×1080 JPG frames; a 4K M4V produces 3840×2160 JPG frames. Use the resize utility after extraction if you want smaller thumbnails or social-media-sized crops.

Will the extracted JPG images preserve the M4V color grading?

HDR footage is not tone-mapped: each frame is converted from the M4V as it is decoded, so a frame from an HDR M4V can look flat or washed out as a JPG. Standard (SDR) video keeps its colours.
What is the file size of one extracted JPG frame?

Depends on resolution and JPG codec. A 1080p PNG frame is typically 2 to 5 MB; a 1080p JPG at quality-85 is 200 to 500 KB; a 4K PNG is 6 to 15 MB. At the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p M4V produces ~50 GB total. It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.

Yes. Uploaded M4V files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted JPG are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Almost always motion blur baked into the M4V source — the camera or subject was moving when the frame was captured. Pick timestamps from static scenes, or extract adjacent frames and choose the sharpest. The pipeline does not synthesize detail that was not there.

No. The converter has no scene detection and no one-per-second mode: it saves either a single frame at the second you enter or every frame. For one image per scene, extract single frames at the times where the scenes change.
