How do I convert JPEG to PSD without losing image quality?

Upload your JPEG file and the converter applies format-aware quality optimization for PSD. For lossless PSD (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved; for lossy PSD (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download. The bitstream is identical to a .jpg: DCT-based lossy compression, usually with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, wrapped in a JFIF or Exif header. A PSD preserves layers, masks, blend modes, smart objects, adjustment layers and editable text as separate live elements.

Can I get transparency once the image is PSD?

The PSD format supports it, but the conversion cannot invent it. A JPEG has no alpha channel, so every pixel including the background arrives fully opaque. Run /image-removebackground/ afterwards to cut the subject out — then the alpha channel PSD provides has something to store. PSD keeps every editing decision reversible, which is why it is the master format for design work that will be revised.

Does converting JPEG to PSD restore the quality that was lost?

No. The compression artefacts already baked into the JPEG are ordinary pixel data now, and PSD preserves them perfectly rather than removing them. The file usually gets larger, sometimes several times larger. It is still worth doing before editing, because further edits will not stack a second generation of loss on top. JPEG shares every JPG limitation — no alpha, generational loss on re-save — with the added nuisance of software that treats the two extensions differently.

Does the PSD keep the EXIF data from my JPEG?

By default yes, wherever the target has somewhere to put it — camera model, exposure settings, lens and GPS coordinates all carry across. GPS is the field worth thinking about: if the image is going to be published, use the strip-metadata option so you are not broadcasting where the photo was taken. JPEG is the same standard as JPG and JFIF — the four-letter extension is the original, and the three-letter one exists only because of the DOS 8.3 filename limit.

Does JPEG to PSD conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when PSD is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware PSD instead of PSD=JPG. PSD is Adobe Photoshop’s native document, and it is a working file rather than a delivery format.

Will my color profile (sRGB / Adobe RGB / CMYK) survive JPEG to PSD?

Embedded ICC color profiles are read from JPEG and re-attached to the PSD output where the format supports it (JPG, PNG, TIFF, WebP). Formats without profile support fall back to sRGB, which keeps colors consistent across most modern displays.

What about EXIF metadata when converting JPEG to PSD?

Camera EXIF (ISO, shutter, lens, GPS coords) is preserved by default during JPEG → PSD when both formats support metadata. Use the privacy option to strip metadata before download if you need to share images without geolocation.

For JPG / WebP, quality 75-85 typically gets the PSD 60-80% smaller than JPEG with no visible difference at normal viewing distance. For lossless PSD (PNG, TIFF), expect smaller savings — usually 5-30% via better deflate / LZW compression.

Are my JPEG files private during conversion?
