ICO to PNG Transformation FAQ

How do I convert ICO to PNG without losing image quality?
+
Upload your ICO file and the converter applies format-aware quality optimization for PNG. For lossless PNG (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved; for lossy PNG (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download. A single ICO holds several renderings of the same icon at different sizes — 16x16 through 256x256 — so the OS can pick the sharpest one. PNG uses DEFLATE compression over filtered scanlines, so every pixel survives exactly, plus a full 8-bit alpha channel.
Transparency survives when PNG is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware PNG instead of PNG=JPG. PNG was designed in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF, and became the web’s default lossless image format.
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the PNG. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
Default is 1:1 — your PNG keeps the pixel dimensions of the source ICO. If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize-image/ after conversion, or chain it with the /image-resize/ utility.
Yes. Uploaded ICO files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted PNG are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
An ICO with strong existing compression (lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded to lossless PNG (PNG, TIFF). A lossless ICO often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG / WebP. The ratio depends on image content — photos compress differently from line art. ICO is not a general image format: it is square, small, and no photo editor treats it as a first-class working file. PNG is a poor photograph format: a photo saved as PNG is routinely five to ten times larger than the same image as JPG or WebP.
Yes. The conversion is a format change — copyright on the image content stays with you (or whoever held it on the source ICO). We add no watermark, no metadata stamp, and claim no licence over the PNG output.

ICO

ICO packs several icon sizes into one file so Windows and browsers can pick the right resolution for favicons and shortcuts.

PNG

PNG files accommodate transparency and use lossless compression, making them ideal for graphics, logos, and screenshots.
