How do I extract the audio from my WebM file as Opus?

Upload the WebM file and the converter demuxes the audio stream, then transcodes it to Opus. There is no second video pass — the visual track is discarded immediately so extraction is much faster than a full re-encode. WebM is a strict subset of Matroska that Google published in 2010 specifically to give HTML5 video a royalty-free container. Opus is an IETF standard from 2012 that merged Skype’s SILK speech codec with Xiph’s CELT music codec into one design.
Is converting WebM to Opus a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the Opus encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the Opus from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. WebM is deliberately narrow: VP8 or VP9 video (AV1 more recently) with Vorbis or Opus audio, and nothing else. Opus scales from 6 kbps mono speech to 510 kbps stereo music in the same bitstream and switches modes automatically.
Can I tag the Opus with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over WebM, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. Opus carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. Opus is the best-sounding lossy codec at low bitrates by a clear margin, and it powers WhatsApp voice notes, Discord and WebRTC.
Will the Opus play in my car or on older hardware?

Often not. WebM is decoded by essentially everything, including car head units and elderly players; Opus needs software that knows the codec, which standalone hardware frequently does not have. If the destination is a car stereo or a portable player, that is a strong argument for staying on WebM. Opus is almost never supported by standalone hardware — assume software playback only, and expect car stereos to ignore it.
What audio bitrate does the extracted Opus use?

Default bitrate for lossy Opus is 192 kbps, which is transparent for music. You can override to 320 kbps (audiophile) or 96-128 kbps (voice / podcast / smaller file). The bitrate dropdown is exposed in the advanced options before you click convert.
Will I lose audio quality going from WebM to Opus?

If Opus is lossless (WAV, FLAC), every sample is preserved exactly. If Opus is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the Opus codec recompresses the source audio — at 192 kbps the result is transparent for almost all content. Going lossy → lossless never recovers detail already discarded.
Does the Opus audio keep the original sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz audio in your WebM stays 48 kHz in the Opus output. For CD-burning or legacy player compatibility you can downsample to 44.1 kHz via the sample-rate dropdown; the resampler is high-quality SoX-grade.
Can I extract audio from multiple WebM files to Opus in one batch?
