How do I extract the audio from my WebM file as MP2?

Upload the WebM file and the converter demuxes the audio stream, then transcodes it to MP2. There is no second video pass — the visual track is discarded immediately so extraction is much faster than a full re-encode. WebM is a strict subset of Matroska that Google published in 2010 specifically to give HTML5 video a royalty-free container. MP2 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer II, the layer that predates MP3 and became the audio standard for DVB and DAB broadcasting.
Is converting WebM to MP2 a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the MP2 encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the MP2 from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. WebM is deliberately narrow: VP8 or VP9 video (AV1 more recently) with Vorbis or Opus audio, and nothing else. MP2 is lossy but uses a simpler filterbank than MP3, typically running at 192 to 384 kbps.
What audio bitrate does the extracted MP2 use?

Default bitrate for lossy MP2 is 192 kbps, which is transparent for music. You can override to 320 kbps (audiophile) or 96-128 kbps (voice / podcast / smaller file). The bitrate dropdown is exposed in the advanced options before you click convert.
Will I lose audio quality going from WebM to MP2?

If MP2 is lossless (WAV, FLAC), every sample is preserved exactly. If MP2 is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the MP2 codec recompresses the source audio — at 192 kbps the result is transparent for almost all content. Going lossy → lossless never recovers detail already discarded.
Does the MP2 audio keep the original sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz audio in your WebM stays 48 kHz in the MP2 output. For CD-burning or legacy player compatibility you can downsample to 44.1 kHz via the sample-rate dropdown; the resampler is high-quality SoX-grade.
Can I extract audio from multiple WebM files to MP2 in one batch?

Why does the MP2 file have silent gaps where the WebM had sound?

Almost always a wrong-stream selection: WebM had multiple audio tracks and the demuxer picked an empty or auxiliary stream. Use the advanced "audio stream" picker to select stream 0, 1, 2 explicitly, or target an MP2 container that supports multi-track output (FLAC, OGG).
Can I keep MP2 as stereo, mono, or 5.1 surround?

Channel layout is preserved from WebM by default — a 5.1 WebM produces a 5.1 MP2 if the MP2 codec supports it (AAC, FLAC, OGG, Opus). The downmix option forces stereo or mono — useful for podcast workflows where surround tracks waste bitrate.
