WebM to BMP Transformation FAQ

How do I extract frames from a WebM video as BMP images?
+
Upload the WebM and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one BMP from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a BMP image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode. WebM is a strict subset of Matroska that Google published in 2010 specifically to give HTML5 video a royalty-free container. BMP is the Windows Bitmap, the raw raster format built into Windows since 1985.
Not if they are a real subtitle track. A WebM keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as a BMP has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became a WebM are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.
Larger than you might expect, because BMP keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse.
The same resolution as the WebM video — a 1080p WebM produces 1920×1080 BMP frames; a 4K WebM produces 3840×2160 BMP frames. Use the resize utility after extraction if you want smaller thumbnails or social-media-sized crops.
Yes, with All Frames in the Frame Extraction option, but watch the count: one minute of 30 fps video gives 1,800 BMP images. For a single still, choose Single Frame and enter the second you want instead.
HDR footage is not tone-mapped: each frame is converted from the WebM as it is decoded, so a frame from an HDR WebM can look flat or washed out as a BMP. Standard (SDR) video keeps its colours.
Depends on resolution and BMP codec. A 1080p PNG frame is typically 2 to 5 MB; a 1080p JPG at quality-85 is 200 to 500 KB; a 4K PNG is 6 to 15 MB. At the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p WebM produces ~50 GB total.
It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
One at a time. Single Frame takes one time in seconds (for example 83 for 1:23) and saves that frame as a BMP. There is no field for a list of times, so run the conversion again for each extra timestamp.
Yes. Uploaded WebM files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted BMP are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Almost always motion blur baked into the WebM source — the camera or subject was moving when the frame was captured. Pick timestamps from static scenes, or extract adjacent frames and choose the sharpest. The pipeline does not synthesize detail that was not there.

WebM

WebM is designed for the web, offering royalty-free video streaming with VP8/VP9 codecs.

BMP

BMP files store images in uncompressed bitmap format, resulting in large file sizes but perfect integrity.
