How do I extract the audio from my MKV file as AAC?

Upload the MKV file and the converter demuxes the audio stream, then transcodes it to AAC. There is no second video pass — the visual track is discarded immediately so extraction is much faster than a full re-encode. MKV is Matroska, an open container designed in 2002 with no licensing restrictions and no ceiling on what it can hold. AAC is Advanced Audio Coding, standardised in 1997 as MPEG-2 Part 7 and designed explicitly to replace MP3.
Is converting MKV to AAC a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the AAC encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the AAC from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. MKV is codec-agnostic: H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video sit happily beside AAC, FLAC, Opus, DTS or Dolby audio in the same file. AAC is lossy but more efficient than MP3, and it handles up to 48 channels natively rather than being bolted onto a stereo design.
Can I tag the AAC with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over MKV, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. AAC carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. AAC sounds noticeably better than MP3 below 128 kbps and is the default audio track in MP4, YouTube, Apple Music and broadcast.
What audio bitrate does the extracted AAC use?

Default bitrate for lossy AAC is 192 kbps, which is transparent for music. You can override to 320 kbps (audiophile) or 96-128 kbps (voice / podcast / smaller file). The bitrate dropdown is exposed in the advanced options before you click convert.
Will I lose audio quality going from MKV to AAC?

If AAC is lossless (WAV, FLAC), every sample is preserved exactly. If AAC is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the AAC codec recompresses the source audio — at 192 kbps the result is transparent for almost all content. Going lossy → lossless never recovers detail already discarded.
Does the AAC audio keep the original sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz audio in your MKV stays 48 kHz in the AAC output. For CD-burning or legacy player compatibility you can downsample to 44.1 kHz via the sample-rate dropdown; the resampler is high-quality SoX-grade.
Can I extract audio from multiple MKV files to AAC in one batch?

Why does the AAC file have silent gaps where the MKV had sound?

Almost always a wrong-stream selection: MKV had multiple audio tracks and the demuxer picked an empty or auxiliary stream. Use the advanced "audio stream" picker to select stream 0, 1, 2 explicitly, or target an AAC container that supports multi-track output (FLAC, OGG).
