AAC to MP3 Transformation FAQ

How do I convert AAC audio to MP3 without losing quality?
+
Upload the AAC file and the converter chooses the MP3 codec and bitrate to match the source. Lossless MP3 (WAV / FLAC / ALAC) preserves every sample bit-identically; lossy MP3 (MP3 / AAC / OGG / Opus) defaults to 192 kbps which is transparent for most ears. AAC is lossy but more efficient than MP3, and it handles up to 48 channels natively rather than being bolted onto a stereo design. MP3 is lossy: a psychoacoustic model discards frequencies the ear is unlikely to notice, typically at 128 to 320 kbps.
Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the MP3 encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the MP3 from that instead avoids the double pass entirely.
It is folded down to stereo, because MP3 has no practical multichannel mode. The downmix uses the standard coefficients so centre-channel dialogue stays clear and the surrounds are mixed in at reduced level. Anything that depended on discrete channel placement is gone once that happens. MP3 is technically outclassed by AAC and Opus at every bitrate, cannot store more than two channels usefully, and always adds a small encoder delay.
Default is 192 kbps for lossy MP3; pass-through for lossless MP3. Override to 320 kbps for audiophile or 96 kbps for voice / podcast. The choice trades file size against audible fidelity; below 96 kbps lossy artifacts become noticeable on music.
If AAC is lossy and MP3 is lossless (e.g. MP3 → WAV), the MP3 is no better than the AAC — you cannot recover information already discarded. If AAC is lossless and MP3 is lossy, the MP3 codec recompresses; at 192 kbps the result is transparent for most content.
Yes — title, artist, album, year, track number, and album art are read from the AAC container and written into the MP3 container where the format supports tags. All common targets (MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG) handle tags fine; raw WAV does not. MP3 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, finalised in 1993, and still the most universally decodable audio format that exists.
Yes — drop a folder of AAC files in and we process them in parallel. Premium has more parallel workers and no per-file size cap, so a 500-file batch finishes in minutes rather than tens of minutes.
By default yes — 48 kHz AAC stays 48 kHz in MP3. If you need to downsample for compatibility (96 kHz → 44.1 kHz for CD burning), the sample-rate option applies high-quality resampling in the same encode pass.
Yes — the loudness-normalize option applies ITU-R BS.1770 / EBU R128 normalization to the MP3, targeting -14 LUFS (streaming standard) or -16 LUFS (podcast standard). Useful when batching tracks mastered at varying levels.
MP3 plays everywhere. AAC plays on Apple, most Android, and Sonos. FLAC plays on Sonos and Android but not on older iPods. WAV plays on everything but is huge. The advanced device-preset dropdown picks an MP3 codec optimized for your target hardware. Nothing beats MP3 for compatibility — car stereos, gym equipment, DAPs and twenty-year-old hardware all read it without question.
Yes — uploaded AAC files are processed in isolated workers and deleted within minutes. We never play back, store long-term, or share the audio content. The full retention window is in /privacy/.
Same-codec re-mux: 10 to 30 seconds. Re-encode to a different codec: typically 10 to 20% of source duration, so a 1-hour AAC → MP3 finishes in 6 to 12 minutes. Batch jobs parallelize across workers for further speedups.

AAC

AAC supplies better sound integrity than MP3 at similar bit rates, used by Apple Music and YouTube.

MP3

MP3 files use lossy compression to reduce file size while sustaining acceptable audio integrity for most listeners.
