AV1 is a codec, not a container — the bitstream normally travels inside MP4 or WebM, paired with Opus or AAC audio. MP3 is lossy: a psychoacoustic model discards frequencies the ear is unlikely to notice, typically at 128 to 320 kbps.
Yes, and it is a genuine gain over AV1, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. MP3 carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. Nothing beats MP3 for compatibility — car stereos, gym equipment, DAPs and twenty-year-old hardware all read it without question.
It is folded down to stereo, because MP3 has no practical multichannel mode. The downmix uses the standard coefficients so centre-channel dialogue stays clear and the surrounds are mixed in at reduced level. If MP3 is lossless (WAV, FLAC), every sample is preserved exactly. If MP3 is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the MP3 codec recompresses the source audio — at 192 kbps the result is transparent for almost all content. Going lossy → lossless never recovers detail already discarded.
