What is a ODT document?

ODT is a word-processing document format. It stores flowing text, styles, tables and embedded images. Different word processors read different ODT variants, so converting between them — or to PDF for sharing — solves a lot of open-this-on-the-other-side problems.

Does converting ODT preserve formatting?

When you convert ODT to a similar document format (Word, ODT, PDF), formatting, fonts, images and tables are preserved with high fidelity. When you convert to a plain-text format (TXT, MD), styling is stripped down to the underlying words.
