How do I extract frames from an AVI video as JPG images?

Upload the AVI and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one JPG from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a JPG image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode. At what resolution does each extracted JPG frame come out?

The same resolution as the AVI video — a 1080p AVI produces 1920×1080 JPG frames; a 4K AVI produces 3840×2160 JPG frames. Use the resize utility after extraction if you want smaller thumbnails or social-media-sized crops.

Will the extracted JPG images preserve the AVI color grading?

HDR footage is not tone-mapped: each frame is converted from the AVI as it is decoded, so a frame from an HDR AVI can look flat or washed out as a JPG. Standard (SDR) video keeps its colours.
What is the file size of one extracted JPG frame?

Depends on resolution and JPG codec. A 1080p PNG frame is typically 2 to 5 MB; a 1080p JPG at quality-85 is 200 to 500 KB; a 4K PNG is 6 to 15 MB. At the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p AVI produces ~50 GB total. It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.

One at a time. Single Frame takes one time in seconds (for example 83 for 1:23) and saves that frame as a JPG. There is no field for a list of times, so run the conversion again for each extra timestamp.
Is my AVI video private during frame extraction?

Yes. Uploaded AVI files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted JPG are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Almost always motion blur baked into the AVI source — the camera or subject was moving when the frame was captured. Pick timestamps from static scenes, or extract adjacent frames and choose the sharpest. The pipeline does not synthesize detail that was not there.
