How do I convert XLS to PDF for sharing and printing?

Can I still edit the content after converting XLS to PDF?

Not the way you edit the XLS. The PDF is a delivery format: it fixes the layout so it renders identically everywhere, which is exactly why it resists editing. Keep the XLS as the working copy and regenerate the PDF whenever the content changes — round-tripping back out of PDF always loses something.
Is the older binary Office format still a safe bet?

It opens everywhere, but it is a compatibility choice rather than a good one. The binary formats predate the XML packages, carry macro payloads that many mail servers strip on sight, and are being steadily deprecated by Microsoft itself. Use them when a specific piece of old software demands them, and the XML format otherwise. PDF is deliberately hard to edit, and a scanned PDF contains no text at all until OCR has been run over it.
Will the PDF open directly in a browser?

Yes, and the XLS would not have. Browsers ship a decoder for PDF and none for XLS, so an XLS link forces a download while a PDF renders inline. That is usually the deciding factor when the file is going onto a web page rather than into an application. A PDF looks byte-for-byte identical on every machine and every printer, which is why contracts, invoices and academic papers all live in it.
Do my spreadsheet formulas survive the conversion to PDF?

The values do; the formulas do not. An XLS stores both the calculation and its current result, and PDF has nowhere to keep the calculation — so what you get is a snapshot of the numbers as they stood at conversion time. Anything that depended on the sheet recalculating stops updating from that point on. XLS is still what a great deal of legacy financial and government reporting tooling emits and expects.
Will the XLS to PDF conversion keep my fonts and formatting?

Yes for text-bearing XLS (DOCX, ODT, HTML, TXT) — fonts are embedded into the PDF so the output looks identical on every viewer. Image-only XLS (JPG, PNG) is centered on the page; text-layout is N/A there.
Can I merge multiple XLS files into one PDF?

What page size and orientation will the PDF use?

Yes for XLS formats that carry real hyperlink metadata (DOCX, ODT, HTML, EPUB). Image XLS (JPG, PNG, TIFF) has no link metadata to preserve. The PDF uses standard PDF anchor syntax so links work in every modern PDF reader.
Is the resulting PDF searchable with real selectable text?

Yes when the XLS contains real text (DOCX, ODT, HTML, TXT, EPUB). Image-based XLS produces an image-only PDF; run /pdf-ocr/ afterward to make it text-searchable via optical character recognition. An XLS is an OLE compound file holding sheets, formulas, formatting and any VBA macros as binary streams.
Can I password-protect the PDF after conversion?

Not in this tool directly — convert XLS to PDF first, then use the /pdf-* tools to add a password, watermark, or restrict editing / printing permissions on the output.
How big will the PDF file be?

Depends on the XLS content. A 10-page DOCX with embedded fonts produces a 200-400 KB PDF. A 10-image JPG batch at full resolution produces a 5-20 MB PDF. The advanced "compress images in PDF" toggle recompresses embedded images at JPG quality-85.
