Will the HTML open directly in a browser?

Yes, and the MOBI would not have. Browsers ship a decoder for HTML and none for MOBI, so a MOBI link forces a download while an HTML renders inline. That is usually the deciding factor when the file is going onto a web page rather than into an application.

Why does my MOBI file refuse to convert?

DRM, in almost every case. A protected MOBI is encrypted and tied to an account, and no converter can decrypt it — ours included. Files you created yourself, or bought from a DRM-free store, convert without any trouble at all. Amazon stopped accepting MOBI for new publishing in 2022, and the format cannot express modern CSS, embedded fonts or fixed layout.
