How do I extract frames from an FLV video as JPG images?

Upload the FLV and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one JPG from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a JPG image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode. FLV is the Flash Video container that carried essentially all web video from roughly 2003 until Flash was switched off at the end of 2020. JPG is the JPEG standard from 1992, served under the .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif extensions alike, and after three decades it is still the format most cameras and most websites use for photographs.
Can I get the JPG frames without the subtitles?

Only if the FLV never had them burned in, because FLV has no selectable subtitle stream to switch off. Anything an FLV shows on screen is in the picture itself, so it is in every JPG the extraction produces and no setting removes it afterwards. Where a separate subtitle file exists alongside the video, extract from a source that kept the two apart and the frames come out clean. No current browser, phone or TV can play FLV — anything still in this container has to be moved out of it to remain watchable.
At what resolution does each extracted JPG frame come out?

The same resolution as the FLV video — a 1080p FLV produces 1920×1080 JPG frames; a 4K FLV produces 3840×2160 JPG frames. Use the resize utility after extraction if you want smaller thumbnails or social-media-sized crops.
Can I extract every single frame from FLV as JPG?

Yes, with All Frames in the Frame Extraction option, but watch the count: one minute of 30 fps video gives 1,800 JPG images. For a single still, choose Single Frame and enter the second you want instead.
Will the extracted JPG images preserve the FLV color grading?

HDR footage is not tone-mapped: each frame is converted from the FLV as it is decoded, so a frame from an HDR FLV can look flat or washed out as a JPG. Standard (SDR) video keeps its colours.
What is the file size of one extracted JPG frame?

Depends on resolution and JPG codec. A 1080p PNG frame is typically 2 to 5 MB; a 1080p JPG at quality-85 is 200 to 500 KB; a 4K PNG is 6 to 15 MB. At the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p FLV produces ~50 GB total. JPG is lossy: the image is transformed with a DCT, quantised, and entropy-coded, with a quality knob controlling how much is discarded.
How long does frame extraction from FLV to JPG take?

It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
Can I extract frames at specific timestamps in the FLV?

One at a time. Single Frame takes one time in seconds (for example 83 for 1:23) and saves that frame as a JPG. There is no field for a list of times, so run the conversion again for each extra timestamp.
Is my FLV video private during frame extraction?

Yes. Uploaded FLV files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted JPG are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why are my extracted JPG frames blurry?

Almost always motion blur baked into the FLV source — the camera or subject was moving when the frame was captured. Pick timestamps from static scenes, or extract adjacent frames and choose the sharpest. The pipeline does not synthesize detail that was not there.
Can I extract one JPG per scene change rather than per timestamp?

No. The converter has no scene detection and no one-per-second mode: it saves either a single frame at the second you enter or every frame. For one image per scene, extract single frames at the times where the scenes change.
